Environmental Studies Emphasis

Doctoral Emphasis in Environmental Humanities

This emphasis is designed to meet the needs of a select group of graduate students from participating departments who demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary environmental scholarship, have a need for additional training in environmental studies or sciences from outside their home departments, and have the support of their major advisor. This emphasis will thus enable these students to expand their training within an established administrative structure, and confer the added benefit of official recognition for doing so from the Graduate Division.

Emphasis Requirements

In addition to having a component of interdisciplinary environmental scholarship, IPEES has four main requirements:

  • Students must take the IPEES Core Seminar (ENV S 200).
  • Students must complete three elective courses dedicated to one of the following purposes: (a) boosting general environmental knowledge, (b) developing a core thematic area outside the student’s home discipline, or (c) developing a methodological skill from outside the student’s home discipline for use in interdisciplinary environmental research.
  • Students must have one outside member on their dissertation committee chosen from the list of participating faculty.
  • Students must participate in at least one IPEES symposium throughout their graduate career.
